Dr. John F. Lann at Stonegate Dentistry wants to make sure that you make an appointment to come see him at least twice a year for regular checkups and cleanings. But what about those six months between visits? Obviously, you can’t come in for a cleaning every day, but brushing and flossing are the next best things.
You should brush at least twice a day. That doesn’t mean a quick swipe with a toothbrush. It should take about two minutes to brush your teeth. You will want to use a soft-bristled brush that will fit comfortably in your mouth. An electric toothbrush does an excellent job at removing plaque, and may be a good choice for you if suffer from arthritis. While your teeth can last a lifetime, your toothbrush can’t. It needs to be replaced at least every three to four months.
Hold your toothbrush at a slight angle and gently brush the inside, outside, and the chewing surfaces of your teeth. When finished, rinse your toothbrush well and store it upright in a place where it can air-dry. Don’t cover your toothbrush or put it in a container. Covering your toothbrush can help yeast, bacteria, and even mold grow on it.
When it comes to toothpastes, there is no shortage of brands on the market. No matter which brand you choose, be sure that it contains fluoride.
